This is an article about Sing Australia, and my wonderful experiences as a Sing Australia Choir Member.

I absolutely love, and I am proud to be a member of Sing Australia. I am the youngest member of the Mornington Choir, and I have been a member for about 7 months now.

We sing every Monday (most of the time) and have performed in Aged Care Facilities, Seniors Clubs, Expos, with many more performances to come in the future. We are always looking for new members, everyone is welcome, so feel free to join us! Here are the details: Mornington Choir - Victoria

I really wanted to join a choir and sing again. I had been looking through the local paper and on websites about local choirs for several weeks. I found an article in the local paper about the Sing Australia choir in Mornington. After thinking about it for a few days, I finally got the courage to ring and enquire about joining. Sandra, the Mornington Choir Leader was really nice. She gave me the details, and I was looking forward to coming. There wasn't any pressure at all, I didn't have to audition (which I would have found extremely nervewracking. That's one of the reasons why I had not joined a choir previously,) and I didn't have to go every week if I didn't want to.

I came to my first Sing Australia choir practice on a Monday. I really loved it. All of the choir members, Sandra our Choir Leader, and Ann our Accompianist/Music Teacher were absolutely wonderful, and I felt welcomed, even though I was the youngest one there.

After the first choir practice, I found the Sing Australia website to find out more information about it. I was very impressed with Sing Australia, it's values, and the opportunities that being a member provides. I then decided to offically became a member.

The members of the Mornington choir are wonderful, remarkable people who are all amazing singers. They have been so good to me, and have been very supportive. They have also helped me when I needed it, even outside of the choir, and I will always be so grateful. I have enjoyed performing with them, they have become my friends. I have learnt so much from them about singing, music, and about life.

Here is the link to our performances, and other performances around Australia as well. The performances/gigs will be listed here when they come up: Sing Australia Gigs

Singing in the choir is fun, relaxing, and has become one positive thing in my life that I always look forward to. I learn about vocal technique and get the opportunity to exercise my vocal chords and lungs, so there are health benefits as well. I also get to practice harmonies and parts in some of the songs that I wouldn't be able to do on my own. I love that we can combine choirs for performances, and get to meet other people from other parts of Australia.

Sing Australia Pty Ltd was established in 1985 by Colin Slater OAM, (Managing Director of Sing Australia and National Director of Sing Australia Choirs) an accomplished singer and singing teacher, to promote singing, Australian compositions and Australian artists.

Here is the Sing Australia Vision:

* For Australia to be a country where everyone sings.

Here is the Sing Australia Mission Statement:

* To make the art of singing accessible to everyone for personal fulfilment, pleasure, and for building friendships.

* To provide a service to the community

There is more detailed information on the mission statement, and also the company history here: About Sing Australia

I really love what Sing Australia represents. Everyone should be able to sing in a choir, and enjoy it, without any pressure to be a absolutely wonderful singer (although the choir members are anyway.) We should all work with Colin to make his wonderful vision happen, and support the great work that he and his team are doing him by joining and becoming a member of Sing Australia. I am so grateful that Sing Australia exists. Since becoming a member of Sing Australia, with the help and support of the members of the Mornington choir, I have gained some of my confidence back again, with singing and performing. (I stopped performing for over 9 years because of difficulties that I was having in my life.) I realised how much I missed it, and that being a part of Sing Australia will give me the experience, and confidence to become a professional singer in the near future.

One of the reasons why I love Sing Australia is that I love that you can go to a choir practice anywhere in Australia. If you go on holidays, you can just go to the closest choir and not miss out. All of the choirs sing from the same book, and sing the same songs. We sing Folk songs, Australian Songs, Christmas Songs, the list goes on. There is a wide selection of repertoire that we sing from, including songs that are in parts, and are great for all sorts of occasions.

One of the other things that I love about Sing Australia, is that I would get the opportunity to travel overseas and go on tour with Sing Australia. There are many tours, and countries that I could go to such to Italy, Turkey, Spain, just to name a few. I know that a few of the other choir members have recently been on tour to Italy, and have shared their experiences with us, and they loved it. I am really looking forward to going on one of the tours in the future.

In November 2008, we had a two hour Sing Australia Workshop here in Mornington. It was fantastic! We had the pleasure of meeting Colin Slater and Kate Gilbert (Publications Manager and Personal Assistant to the National Director) for the first time (for some of us.) We also had the pleasure of meeting other members of the Hawthorn choir. As an added bonus, we met some other wonderful people, and gained some new members for the Mornington choir! We have learnt quite a lot from Colin. He explained that everyone has the ability to sing. Colin also gave us some lessons/advice about breathing from the diaphragm, the position of the mouth when singing, vocal technique, as well as overcoming fear/anxiety which stops people from singing. We sang some of the songs in our choir books, and some people did solo performances for the group. It was so much fun, and we all had such a great time. I recommend going to one of the Sing Australia Workshops, if you love to sing, and want to learn more about singing, and it also a great way to meet new people.

If you more information about the Sing Australia Workshops, or if you want to contact or join the Sing Australia Choir, go to their website at: http://www.singaustralia.com.au

There is also a Sing Australia Choir Group on Facebook that you can join when you become a member. Through this group, you get the opportunity to contact, and get to know Sing Australia choir members from other parts of Australia through the internet, if you haven't had the chance to meet them in person. The group is created and run by Courtney Renee-Hodges, the youngest member of the Port Macquarie Choir. More Information Here: Sing Australia Facebook Group

I know that you will love being a member of the Sing Australia Choir as much as I do!
